Paul has won in every category in which he has competed. A DTM and F3 Euroseries champion, he drove in Formula 1 for Force India from 2011 to 2013, scoring 121 points. He then rejoined Mercedes to race again in DTM, where he was once again a race winner. Meanwhile, he became reserve driver for Williams F1.

In 2018 Paul made a promising debut in endurance prototypes at Daytona, Sebring, Watkins Glen and Le Mans. Meantime in DTM he was a leader at various stages of the season before finishing third overall after a dramatic finale, having scored three wins, two pole positions and six podium finishes.

In 2019, he stays in DTM but joins newcomer Aston Martin operated by R-Motorsport.
